Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification Practice Exam

The term for the process of washing instruments to remove organic material before sterilization is decontamination. This process is essential in the healthcare setting as it reduces the microbial load and cleanses instruments of blood, tissue, and other contaminants that may interfere with the effectiveness of sterilization.

Decontamination typically involves cleaning, which can include manual scrubbing, ultrasonic cleaning, or using automated systems designed for this purpose. It ensures that instruments are adequately prepared for the subsequent sterilization phase, enabling effective removal of any remaining pathogens.

In contrast, disinfection refers to the process of eliminating most pathogenic microorganisms from inanimate surfaces and does not necessarily involve the thorough cleaning required before sterilization. Sanitization is the process of reducing the number of microorganisms to safe levels as determined by public health standards, which may not always meet the strict requirements for surgical instruments. Sterilization is the complete destruction of all forms of microbial life, including spores, and occurs after the decontamination process has been successfully completed.
